Week 4 of Art Journaling

This week in our art journal class we explored building beautiful layered backgrounds using a mix of vintage and everyday papers. We started by collaging torn book pages, sheet music, and notepaper to create a rich, textured foundation. There’s something so satisfying about layering different fonts, tones, and fragments of text to form the base of a page.
Once our backgrounds were dry, we used white or pale acrylic paint with a dry brush technique to gently “knock back” areas of the collage. This softens the busy patterns underneath while still allowing hints of the text and music to peek through — creating depth, contrast, and a dreamy, timeworn feel.
To finish, we added a focal point using meaningful words or chosen images. Butterflies were especially popular today 🦋 — symbolising growth, change, and transformation. Each journal page turned out completely unique, reflecting personal stories and creative expression.
